Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Prince Strikes Twice as Zias Blank Eighth-Ranked Rambelles

Sunday, October 12, 2014

PORTALES, N.M. —  Senior midfielder Alyssa Prince (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces HS) registered the first multi-goal game of her career, to lead the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (6-5; LSC 3-2) to a Lone Star Conference win over previously undefeated and eighth-ranked Angelo State (10-1-1; LSC 3-1-1), Sunday at ENMU Soccer Field. Her first goal snapped a streak of 785:17 in which the Rambelles had not allowed a goal.

The win was the fifth overall for Eastern in the series against Angelo State and the first since a 1-0 decision at home on October 23, 2011. The Rambelles entered the contest having not surrendered a goal in seven consecutive matches, since a 4-1 win over Colorado-Mesa, on September 13. That contest also marked the only other time ASU has trailed in a game this season.

Angelo State held a 4-2 edge in shots and a 2-0 lead in corners in the opening half. From 30 yards out, Prince sneaked a shot inside the upper left corner of the Rambelle goal, just above the reach of goalkeeper Shantel Wittke, with 10:02 left in the first half, to give Eastern a 1-0 lead. Angelo State nearly netted the equalizer in the final minute of the half, but Tiffany Dang's shot deflected off the crossbar with 37 seconds left.

The teams played evenly throughout the second half, with ASU holding a slim one-shot advantage. Prince added an insurance goal 20:29 into the period on a header after passes from Melissa Moxley (Jr., D, Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho HS) and Renee Romero (Sr., D, Albuquerque, N.M./Volcano Vista HS). Eastern's defense limited the Rambelles to one shot on goal for the remainder of the game, from Sierra Anderson with 10:51 left.

The Rambelles held an 11-8 edge in total shots and a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. Fabienne Wilson (Sr., GK, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC) made five saves to register her second shutout of the season. Wittke made one save for ASU.

The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will conclude its home stand on Friday, to take on West Texas A&M. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. MT.
