PORTALES, NM — The 2016-17 year has been a strong one for the Eastern New Mexico University athletic department both on the field and in the classroom. That trend continued on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lone Star Conference released its Commissioner's Honor Roll for the fall semester, and the Greyhounds led the league with 171 honorees.

"Once again Greyhound student athletes have excelled in the classroom," said ENMU President Dr. Steven Gamble. "We at eastern take pride in the academic success of our students and many of our athletes achieve at the highest level. I am grateful that our coaches emphasize the academic side of the university as well as the athletic side."

"We are very proud to realize the academic accomplishments of our student athletes as they are compared to their peers," said ENMU Athletic Director Dr. Greg Waggoner.

To be eligible for the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll, a student athlete must have at least a 3.3 grade-point average for the designated semester and be on a roster. The league releases its honor roll at the conclusion of each semester of the academic year.

It was a strong semester overall academically for the LSC, with Eastern's 171 members leading the pack, while West Texas A&M was second with 164 honorees. The two schools also led the LSC in perfect GPA's, with WT's 48 student athletes just two ahead of Eastern's 46 athletes with a 4.0 GPA. A total of 1,190 student-athletes from LSC schools were named to the Honor Roll, with 326 having perfect GPAs.

"This is a result of fine work by many, including coaches, advisors, compliance staff and our fine faculty," added Waggoner. "However, this is mostly a tribute to our dedicated student athletes and their commitment to academics while also seeking excellence as competitive intercollegiate athletes."
