Big Hits Lead to Doubleheader Sweep for Diamond Greyhounds at Highlands

Wednesday, March 01, 2017

LAS VEGAS, NM —Kylee Keller hit a grand slam, while Samantha Brockman and Susannah Chandler both homered on the way to a doubleheader sweep at New Mexico Highlands, Wednesday afternoon. The Eastern New Mexico University softball team (11-13) held on to win the opener 9-7, before closing out the cowgirls for a 9-6 decision in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the Hounds win the season series against the Cowgirls 4-0 and improved to 26-24 all-time against Highlands. The last time ENMU swept the season series against NMHU came in the 2014, when the teams met twice. Eastern also improved to 9-12 on the road against the Cowgirls. The Greyhounds are 7-0 this season against teams from New Mexico

Keller's grand slam was the Hounds' first of the season. ENMU hit four last year. Eastern's last grand slam was hit by Kyra Sirag last season against Texas A&M-Kingsville on March 26, 2016. Erikka Burke was the last ENMU player to crack a grand slam in a road game, coming against Lubbock Christian on March 22, 2016.

Keller has reached base in all 21 of her games this season, the longest streak since Amanda Martinez (29) and Audrey Velasquez (28) in the 2015 season. Cameron Conrad extended her hit streak to 10 consecutive games.

Game 2
The Hounds trailed 3-1 in the nightcap, before Keller's one out grand slam gave them the lead for good. Chandler extended the lead in the fourth frame with a solo shot, and Brockman followed with a two-run blast for an 8-3 advantage.

The Cowgirls managed to score in the fifth inning, but the Hounds answered with a RBI single in the sixth from Conrad. After scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh, Highlands brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Greyhound pitcher Kiana Zerr retired the final two batters to earn her second win of the season.

Chandler batted three-for-five, while Brockman drove in three runs, which included a first-inning sacrifice fly. Zerr fanned four batters and allowed no walks.

Game 1
In the opener, starting pitchers Kaylee Rogers and Madison Davis each allowed just three earned runs. Eastern capitalized on six NMHU errors to plate six earned runs and pick up the win.

Brockman and Chandler each had two hits and a double. Conrad, Kamalani Peneku and Chandler each had two runs batted in. Rogers fanned a career-high 10 batters and scattered 12 hits to pick up the win.
