Gene Murphy led the ENMU golf team to District 7 Championships in 1961, 1962 and 1963. He also was a letterman on the swimming & diving team in its first three years of existence (1962-64). In 1963 he led the gold program to the NAIA championship after fourth and fifth place finishes in the previous two seasons. In 1964 the swim team was the national runner-up with Murphy taking third in the three-meter and fifth in the one-meter. He led the swim team to a fourth-place finish in 1963.
