John Irwin was an All-American and earned First Team All-Tournament when the Greyhound basketball team captured the NAIA National Championship in 1969. He also was an All-District honoree. Irwin was responsible for victories in many games with his rebounding and scoring ability. He shot nearly 70 percent over five games in the 1969 championship tournament.
