Tres Segler

Segler enters his fifth season as the head coach for Greyhound basketball.

Under Segler's direction, the Greyhounds have appeared in back to back Lone Start Conference Tournaments. While multiple players have been named with All-LSC honors, while eleven former Hounds have fulfilled their dreams of playing professional basketball. 

The 2019-20 Greyhounds faced the 18 team Lone Star Conference with their first win of the season at St. Mary’s. The Hounds missed playoff competition falling to Midwestern State in the last home game of the season. The Greyhounds made history tying for first after recording a 68.2 three point percentage, going 15-for-22 from beyond the arc in an 81-66 win over Oklahoma Christian to round out 2019.

During the 2018-19 campaign, the Greyhounds defeated Tarleton State on the road for the first time since 1996 and also began league play 3-0 for the first time since 2006 while finishing with a record of 7-2 inside Greyhound Arena.

The Hounds earned a number four seed taking them to the LSC Conference tournament. Matched against the Tarleton Texas, the Greyhounds lost by two points knocking them out of the LSC tournament. Despite a first round loss, the Hounds finished the 2018-19 season 13-14 overall 10-8 in conference, marking their highest winning season in conference play since 2003-04. 

Prior to the 2018-19 season, Segler took the Greyhounds to the programs first Lone Star Conference Tournament in four years after taking down Texas A&M-Kingsville 58-56 in the final game of the regular season. 

Segler’s first season as a head coach saw a marked improvement in the program as a whole as Joe Clarke and Thompson each earned honorable mention All-LSC honors and the team doubled their win total from a season ago, finishing with a record of 13-15. 

Segler came to Eastern New Mexico with deep ties to the Lone Star Conference after serving as the lead assistant at Midwestern State since 2011. Segler assisted or oversaw multiple aspects of the program and was a key part of the rich success that the Mustangs experienced during his time in Wichita Falls.

The Mustangs won the Lone Star Conference and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Segler’s first year as top assistant and then followed that 2011-12 season up with back-to-back 20-win seasons and appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. 

Prior to being named the lead assistant, Segler served as the Camp Coordinator and second assistant coach from 2009-2011 before being promoted in the spring of 2011. His primary responsibilities came in the overall promotion and operations of the basketball program as a whole.

Segler got his start to coaching at the University of Texas where he served as a graduate assistant from 2007-2009, during which time he saw firsthand the interworking’s of how a top-level Division I program operates. He assisted in the scouting, practices, and workouts of 13 NBA draft picks, highlighted by All-Star and five-time scoring champion Kevin Durant. He served in a variety of positions while at the University of Texas beginning in the year 2003 prior to being named a graduate assistant including camp coordinator, student manager, and weight room assistant.

Segler graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology in 2007 and then again in 2009 with a Master’s of Education in Kinesiology in 2009. 

He currently resides in Portales with his wife Katherine and three young children Hollis, Arden and Holden.
