PORTALES, N.M. — Junior midfielder
Danielle Caro (Denton, Texas/John H. Guyer HS) drew a foul at the top of the West Texas A&M goal box, 2:43 into overtime and netted the game-winning goal on the ensuing penalty kick, to lift the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (7-5; LSC 4-2) to a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over the Lady Buffs (6-8; LSC 2-4), Friday at ENMU Soccer Field. Caro has connected on both penalty kicks she has taken this season.
The Zias are 6-10-1 against West Texas A&M, but have posted a 3-0-1 record over the last two seasons. With two 1-0 victories this season, Eastern has swept the season series for the first time in team history.
WT held a 14-10 advantage in shots through regulation, which included a 7-4 lead in shots on goal. The Lady Buffs nearly scored early in the game, on a shot by Jessie Thomas, which was narrowly stopped by
Fabienne Wilson (Sr., GK, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC). Thomas found her own rebound and fired another shot on goal, which was saved by an ENMU defender.
With just over 20 minutes left in the second half,
Tyra Gabehart (So., F, Aztec, N.M./Aztec HS) nearly snapped the scoreless tie, but was thwarted by a diving save from Nicole Kemper. Neither team managed to find the net and Eastern went to overtime for the second time this season.
After taking a pass, Caro dribbled to the top of the box, before she drew a foul from a WT defender. She deposited the ball into the left side of the Lady Buff net, to seal the win.
Eastern managed a 2-1 edge in corner kicks but West Texas A&M held a 7-5 lead in shots on goal. Wilson made six saves to notch her third shutout of the season, while Kemper made three saves.
