CANYON, TEXAS — A goal from junior defender
Melissa Moxley (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho HS) late in the first half, lifted the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (5-4; LSC 2-1) to its first-ever road victory over West Texas A&M (4-6; LSC 1-2) in Lone Star Conference, Friday at The Pitch. The goal was the second of the season for Moxley and the first game-winning goal of her career.
Entering the contest, Eastern was 0-6-1 in road games against West Texas A&M, with the tie coming last season. The Zias are now 5-10-1 against the Lady Buffs, but have posted a 2-0-1 record in the last three meetings. Paired with Sunday's win over Texas Woman's University, ENMU has now won consecutive road games in LSC play for the first time in team history.
The first half featured back and forth action, with the Zias out shooting WT by a 4-3 margin, although Eastern had all four of the half's shots on goal. After a foul from the Lady Buffs, Moxley found the back of the net on a free kick at the 31:27 mark.
The Lady Buffs held a 6-5 edge in total shots in the second half and a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal, but
Fabienne Wilson (Sr., GK, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS/Garden City CC) made both saves to post her first shutout of the season and third of her career.
Each team took nine shots with ENMU holding a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-1 lead on corner kicks. Wilson improved to 3-1 on the season with the win. Nicole Kemper made five saves for the Lady Buffs.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will open a three-match home stand on Friday, October 10, against Midwestern State. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
