Goalfest on Senior Day for Greyhound Soccer

PORTALES, N.M. – In the final game of the 2014 season for the Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team, they came away with a 5-1 victory over Lubbock Christian Sunday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field. They Greyhounds honored seniors Jehmaine Brooks, Abayneh Crosby and Eanna O'Gormon along with sophomore Jose Hernandez prior to the last game of their Eastern careers.

ENMU ends the year with a 7-6-3 mark while the Chaps close out at 9-6-1. The win assured the Greyhounds of their third straight winning season.

Crosby got the scoring started halfway through the 23rd minute. He received a flick pass from freshman Daniel Sanchez in the middle of the box and easily beat the goalkeeper with his shot. Also getting credit with an assist was sophomore Ryan McManus.

Junior Cesar Quintero set up Eastern's second goal of the game with a centering pass to fellow classmate Alexis Medina. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, Medina ripped a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the year. McManus got his second assist of the game on the score as well.

Nearly eight minutes into the second half, junior Carlos Viveros scored his second goal of the season. He juked out two defenders and took a crack at the net from 18 yards out. Freshman Isaak Arrieta had an assist on the play with his centering pass setting up the score.

In the 61st minute, freshman Christian Johnson nearly headed in a cross on a Greyhound counter attack. His shot though went slight wide of the right post.

ENMU would only have to wait four minutes later before they found the back of the net again. Arrieta sent a pass up the right side to Hernandez. After a couple of dribbles, Hernandez sent in the ball from the top right corner of the penalty box. His crossed looked like a shot that was going wide but junior Roberto Zatarain was there to get his foot on the ball for his second goal this year.

Hernandez scored the final goal for the Greyhounds and his second this season midway into the 70th minute. Crosby stole the ball in LCU's defensive third of the field. Sending the ball forward past on oncoming defender, he appeared to be fouled but the referee allowed play to continue. Hernandez was able to beat the keeper to the ball and placed it in the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Chaps scored with 76 seconds left in the game when Elijah Madikatire blasted a free kick from just outside the penalty box into the back of the net.

Crosby, Hernandez and Medina all took a game-high four shots and placed two on goal. The two assists for Arrieta and McManus are tied for the second most in a game by a Hound player and is the third and fourth occurrences this season.

Finishing the year with a team-high 14 points and five goals was Crosby. His 35 career points is tied for the ninth most in school history with Jared Morris (2005-08).

Hernandez was credited with seven assists in 2014, tied for the second most in a season by an ENMU player, while his 10 careers assists is tied for the sixth most in program history.

Freshman James Gutierrez played the first 76 minutes of the game and made three saves without allowing a goal. He has 72 saves this year which ranks fifth on the school's single-season list and is the second most ever by a Greyhound in their career. His 84.7 save percentage and 0.90 GAA rank as the best and second best, respectively, in a season by an Eastern goalkeeper.

Playing the last 14 minutes in the contest was freshman Andreas Ahlberg. He made two saves in his short time on the field.

The five goals is tied for the seventh most in school history and the most since tallying six last season against Southern Nazarene. Eastern also tied the single-game program mark for assists in a game with eight while the 18 points in the contest are tied for the second most ever.

As a team, ENMU tied the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season with 17 that was set by the 2011 team. This year's squad did set a new school record in save percentage at 82.7.
