PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced that Logan Medlin (Sr., Tatum, N.M./Tatum HS) and Hayden Segelke (Jr., Snyder, Colo.) have been selected as the recipients of the Greatest Greyhound and Greatest Zia awards for the 2013-14 season. Both were standout performers and national champions for the ENMU rodeo team, last year.

"As a coach I feel blessed to have been able to recruit rodeo athletes like Logan Medlin and Hayden Segelke," said ENMU Rodeo Coach Albert Flinn. "They have the athletic ability to win national championships. Logan has been the national champion team roping heeler back-to-back, in 2013 and 2014. Hayden has won three national championships. In 2012 and 2013 she was the women's national champion all-around. This year she is the national goat tying champion.   It is an honor to have both the Greatest Greyhound and Greatest Zia in the same year."

"I believe our coaches and staff did a great job in their selections," said Geiser. "How can you debate two time national champion Logan Medlin and national champion Hayden Segelke? They are definitely deserving.  Having rodeo sweep the most prestigious awards in our athletic department makes a strong statement demonstrating the hard work, dedication and leadership of our head coach, Albert Flinn. Congratulations to him as well."

At the conclusion of athletic seasons, coaches nominate athletes from their own squad for the Greatest Greyhound and Greatest Zia awards. Coaches and athletic staff members then vote for the athletes they feel are most worthy of the prestigious awards, although a coach is not allowed to vote for their own athlete.

Segelke led the women's rodeo team its best finish in decades. ENMU won eight of their 10 rodeos and never finished lower than third. She turned in a championship effort in the goat tying at the College National Finals Rodeo, edging the event's all-around champion in the process. Segelke's performance helped Eastern claim its first regional crown since the 1992 season. Including the national finals and Eastern's College "Daze" Rodeo, she won the goat-tying event at three rodeos.

Medlin concluded his career at ENMU with his second consecutive national championship in team roping. Their average of 26 seconds on four steers, was the only sub-30 second time in the competition. Medlin also claimed the team roping title at the Ranger College Rodeo.
