PORTALES, N.M. — Junior guard
Sarah Stinnett (Fort Sumner, N.M./Howard College) poured in a career-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (4-8; LSC 0-2) in Sunday's 72-46 Lone Star Conference setback to league leading Midwestern State (13-1; LSC 4-0) at Greyhound Arena.
ENMU came out on fire and used buckets from Stinnett,
Jasmine Johnson (Sr., P, DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto HS) and
Dominique Carpenter (Fr., G, Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola HS) to build a 9-2 lead over the opening 4:18 of action. Midwestern State fired back with a 12-0 run over the ensuing 7:13 and took the lead for good on Shatoia Gober's fast break layup. The Zias managed to pull within 14-11 on
Brittany Gutierrez's (Jr., P, Gallup, N.M./Otero JC) two free throws with 6:26 left in the opening half, but could come no closer as the Mustangs pulled away for the win.
Each team scored 12 points off turnovers, but Midwestern State capitalized on a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points. Johnson scored eight points and grabbed eight boards for the Zias, while
Tori Tucker (Sr., F, Portales, N.M./Floyd HS/Howard College) hit a free throw to extend her scoring streak to all 38 games played for ENMU. Andrea Carter paced MSU with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MT.
