PORTALES, N.M.— The Eastern New Mexico University basketball teams split games at tournaments over the weekend, with both teams making impressive showings. The volleyball team closed its season at the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Goeasternathletics.com Student Athletes of the Week were
Kassandra Harris (women's basketball),
John Gilliam (men's basketball), and
Lauren Frye (volleyball).
Kassandra Harris registered a strong performance for the ENMU women's basketball team against a pair of tough regional opponents. On Friday, she shot .529 from the floor and poured in a season-high 21 points against 14th-ranked Lubbock Christian. Harris followed with 12 points and six rebounds in a four-point win over Texas-Permian Basin. For the season, she is sixth in the Lone Star Conference in scoring.
John Gilliam exploded for 27 points per game over the weekend and propelled the Greyhounds to their first win of the season. He registered a career-high 31-point outburst, hit better than 62 percent from the floor and 90.9 percent from the free-throw line in a close loss to Western State. One day later, Gilliam poured in 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a come-from-behind win over Colorado Mesa. He had 10 points in a key second half which lifted the Hounds to an 86-82 win.
Lauren Frye was selected to the Lone Star Conference All-Tournament team after she registered a 15-kill performance against top-seeded Tarleton State. For the season, Frye registered a team-best 496 kills and is the fifth player to reach 1,000 kills in a career. With 1,149 kills, she ranks fourth at ENMU and is just 118 away from tying recent Hall of Honor inductee, Irma Cobos-Hernandez.
