LAS CRUCES, N.M — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (4-4) held a 14-12 lead after the first quarter against NCAA Division I New Mexico State, and trailed by just a single point late in the third quarter. The Aggies used a late run to pull away for a 76-61 win, Monday night at the Pan American Center.
Kassandra Harris notched her first double double of the season, with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds.
New Mexico State jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but a jumper from
Miranda Moore sparked a 7-1 run, with the Hounds seizing a 10-7 lead on a trey from
Sarah Stinnett with 3:04 left in the quarter. After an Aggie layup,
Briana White and Stinnett hit jumpers to give ENMU a 14-9 lead. Zaire Williams hit a trey with seven seconds on the clock, to pull the Aggies within two points. Stinnett scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the opening quarter.
Eastern took a pair of four-point leads in the second quarter, but NMSU put together a 15-2 run to take a 27-18 lead late in the period. The teams exchanged buckets with the Aggies holding a 33-25 lead at halftime.
Eliza Martinez hit a jumper to start the second half, which was followed by a Harris layup to spark a 9-2 Greyhound surge. The run was capped by a Stinnett fast break layup to pull the Hounds within a point, 35-34, with 5:53 left in the third quarter. The Hounds would pull within one point on one more occasion, with John McClelland hitting a jumper with 3:44 in the quarter to close within 40-39. The Aggies scored 12 of the next 14 points to seize a 49-41 advantage. Eastern managed to pull within single digits twice, before New Mexico State pulled away for the win.
The Aggies held a slim 37.3-36.4 edge in shooting percentage, although Eastern held a 44.4-25.9 percent advantage outside the three-point arc. NMSU held a 28-8 lead in points off turnovers. McClelland had nine points and seven boards for ENMU, while
Jordyn Cooper dished out a team-high three assists.
Jasmine Hotchkins and Moore each chipped in six points, while Martinez blocked a pair of shots. Tyesha Taylor paced New Mexico State with 15 points.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team will visit Seattle Pacific on Friday. The game will tip off at 8 p.m. MT.
