Florida Southern Outlast Hounds in Shootout

Thursday, December 17, 2015

LAKELAND, FLA. — Despite five players scoring in double digits, the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team couldn't manage to outpace Florida Southern College in their 100-90 loss Thursday.

Javaan Mumtaz led the team with 19 points, hitting an incredible 5-of-7 three pointers in 32 minutes of play.  Javandon Staves, Lawrence Domingo, Ladarius Stewart and Brady Patterson also recorded double figures, with 15, 14, 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Kevin Saiz was one point away from joining his teammates with nine points in the contest.

Domingo recorded his second double-double of the season with his 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Stewart chipped in with his first double-double, grabbing 10 boards to go along with his 11 points from the field.

ENMU (3-6) was unconscious from deep, going 15-30 from beyond the arc for 50 percent three shooting on the night.  The high scoring shootout saw the teams combine for 28 three pointers, with the Mocs (5-6) hitting 13-32 long balls.

Where the game was decided was at the free-throw line, where an aggressive Florida Southern appeared at the charity stripe 29 times while sinking 25 freebies.  The Greyhounds only went 13-20, creating a 12 point deficit from the line.

Florida Southern's defense also caused fits for the Hounds, with ENMU recorded 23 turnovers in the loss, compared to only eight by the Mocs.  Assists were fairly even across the two teams, with Domingo leading ENMU with six, only four assists away from his first career triple-double.

ENMU is back in action Saturday, where they will meet Eckerd University in the first round of the Tampa Classic in Tampa, Fla.  Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).  The Hounds will take on Tampa University Sunday before returning home for their first home game of the season on Dec. 31, against Wayland Baptist University.
