LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Freshman pitcher
Aja Secheslingloff(Fr., Acampo, Calif./Lodi HS) allowed just two hits and faced four batters above the minimum to lead the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (4-2) to a 2-1 win over Fort Lewis College (1-7) in Saturday afternoon's contest in the Desert Stinger Tournament at Majestic Park. Over the weekend, she has posted a 2-0 record and allowed one run on five hits over 12 innings with no walks.
The victory was ENMU's second straight over the SkyHawks and improved the Zias to 8-1 overall in the series. With the victory, Secheslingoff is the first pitcher to open a season 4-0 since Dawn Murray in the 2001 season.
The Zias struck first when
Susannah Chandler (So., SS, Farmington, N.M./Piedra Vista HS) reached on a single through the left side of the infield in top of the second inning, took second on a walk to
Simone Laurenz (Fr., DP, Portales, N.M./Portales HS) and scored on an
Elizabeth Velasquez (Sr., 3B, Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces HS) single.
Audrey Velasquez's (Sr., 1B, Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces HS) one-out single in the Zia third inning set up a RBI single to give ENMU a 2-0 lead.
FLC shortstop Adrianna Rosthenhausler registered her team's first hit of the game, one out into the fourth inning, with a solo homerun to centerfield. Denae Fisher had the other hit for Fort Lewis, a single in the fifth inning.
Eastern held a 6-2 advantage in total hits, which included a 2-0 advantage with runners in scoring position.
Audrey Velasquez and Chandler both had two base hits. Victoria Johnson suffered the loss for the Sky Hawks and allowed both runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.
The Eastern New Mexico University softball team will continue play in the Desert Stinger Tournament on this evening against University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MT.
