BLACKWATER DRAW — Junior quarterback
Ryan Greene (Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) scored from 10 yards out with 10:03 to play and
Tayshaun Gary (Fr., RB, El Paso, Texas/Andress HS) found the end zone on a two-point conversion play to give the green team the lead for good at the Eastern New Mexico University Spring Football Game. Green rallied from an early 12-point deficit to post a 22-20 win and conclude spring practice for the Greyhounds.
After a scoreless first quarter, running back
Kamal Cass (Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) scored on runs of one and eight yards, as the green team built a 12-0 advantage. The silver squad countered with a 62-yard kick return from
Russell Montoya (Fr., WR, Albuquerque, N.M./Valley HS), which set up a 14-yard score from 14-yards out, to cut the deficit in half.
The green team retained the momentum in the second half, and seized a 14-12 lead on an 18-yard touchdown run from Gary, followed by a two-point conversion catch from
Aaron Johnson (So., WR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Vista Ridge HS). Less than one minute later, the silver team took the lead right back, 20-14, on a 42-yard touchdown sprint from
Tyler Wilson (R-Jr., Hobbs, N.M./Hobbs HS/NMMI).
The game winning drive went 11 plays, with
Jeremy Doucette (R-So., FB, St. Martinville, La./ Cecilia HS) and
D'Maujeric Tucker (So., Lubbock, Texas/Frenship HS) combining for 32 yards on seven plays. Green found the end zone to tie the game on second-and-goal from the 10-yard line and Gary scored the game-winning conversion.
The silver team outgained the green team 383-288 in total offense, but the green squad held a 227-128 in the second half. Doucette paced the green team with 123 yards and a touchdown, while Green completed five passes for 76 yards. Wilson led the silver team, with 139 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Cass ran for 99 yards and two scores.
Jerrel Bradford (Jr., DB, Compton, Calif./ Robert A. Millikan HS / Cerritos College) and
Joshua Bounds (R-Jr., DL, Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) each had six tackles for the silver team, while
Conner Gaskins (R-Fr., LB, Aztec, N.M./Aztec HS) had 12 for the green team.
The Eastern New Mexico University football team will open the 2015 season on Thursday, September 3, at home against New Mexico Highlands. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
