PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University football team will open the 2015 season against cross-state rival New Mexico Highlands University. The contest marks ENMU's final home opener at Blackwater Draw, and head coach
Josh Lynn enters his fourth season.
Thursday Night ShowdownThe last time ENMU played in a Thursday night game, Kenneth Odie returned a fourth-quarter fumble 58 yards after a David Reed sack. The play occurred with 13:46 left in the game and
lifted the Hounds to a 14-10 victory over Northeastern State, on September 6, 2007.
At the Starting LineThe Eastern New Mexico University football team will be opening the 2015 season at home against New Mexico Highlands. The Cowboys compete in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Last season, the teams met for the fourth time since September 13, 2003. ENMU has opened the season against Highlands on 13 occasions and won six of those games.
Overall, the Greyhounds are 38-37 in season openers, and have won 10 of their last 18.
Last season, the Hounds took a 44-21 decision at Highlands.
In the 38 seasons they won their opening contest, the Greyhounds have posted 26 winning seasons, nine losing seasons, and a pair of .500 seasons. In contrast, when Greyhounds dropped their season opener, they have had 25 losing seasons, nine winning seasons, and thee .500 seasons. ENMU has earned a tie in its opener three times, with one winning season and two losing seasons following. Despite last seasons' loss, Eastern won seven games and claimed a share of the Lone Star Conference title.
In the SeriesThe Greyhounds are 31-13 against New Mexico Highlands and have won four of the last seven meetings,
including a 45-14 decision at Greyhound Stadium, on September 13, 2003. Lee Price snapped a 7-all tie, 11 seconds into the second quarter, with a 25-yard field goal, as the Hounds surged to a 24-7 lead. Prior to three consecutive losses in the series, Eastern had outscored the Cowboys by an average 26.3-13.6 points per game margin and posted a series best seven-game win streak from 1983 through 1991, while dropping consecutive games just once in the series (1992-93).
