KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — Despite a close fought effort by Lawrence Domingo and the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team, the Greyhounds couldn't overcome an early nine point deficit to Texas A&M-Kingsville in their 74-61 loss Saturday.
Domingo finished leading all scorers with 25 points on 11-15 shooting and nine rebounds, one off what would have been his fifth double-double on the season. Javandon Staves was second on the team with 11 points. No other Greyhound (4-11, 0-3 LSC) scored over in double digits.
Chaunce Hill and Stephon Edwards both had some productive minutes early in the game but quickly and unfortunately found themselves in foul trouble half way through the first half. Hill's absence was especially missed as his presence in the middle was wreaking havoc on the Javelinas (9-5, 1-2 LSC). Hill finished with four blocks and six rebounds.
To start the contest Kingsville ran off nine straight points, immediately putting ENMU in a hole right off the bat. While Eastern would never tie the matchup, they brought the game to within a score several times and were never out of the game until the final buzzer.
ENMU again struggled from the line, hitting 11-26 (42 percent) of their free-throws. Defense was a key reason to the loss as well, as both teams shot right below 50 percent from the field, but the Javelinas had more chances to score and took advantage of points off turnovers, scoring 25 points off Greyhound mistakes.
Eastern will now look to turn their season around against Angelo State at home Saturday, Jan. 16, looking to get their first conference win. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. (MT).
