Volleyball Brings Home The Bacon With 3-0 Win Over Kingsville

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team recorded its first victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in over a decade with a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 27-25, 25-22) on Saturday evening at Greyhound Arena. The Greyhounds last beat the Javelinas on Nov. 6, 2004 and the seven home victories are the most by ENMU since the 2004 season. With the victory, the Green and Silver improve to 12-10 overall and 7-5 in Lone Star Conference action.

"We're just getting better," ENMU Head Coach Sia Poyer said on the biggest difference between tonight's match and the 3-0 loss the Greyhounds took earlier in the season to TAMUK. "We hadn't really played a lot of games when we played them before. In this conference, you have to expect the home team to play really well. Give our girls a lot of credit. This was a big week for us, beating West Texas and now Kingsville."

Junior Tiana Roebuck posted a career-night setting the ball for the Greyhounds. The Thatcher, Ariz., native dished out 26 assists, the most in her tenure at Eastern. Senior Lauren Frye picked up 14 kills and hit .321 in the winning effort while freshmen Sarah Tuioti-Mariner and Jennifer Martinez tallied 10 and nine, respectively. Talaitupu Faumui and Courtney Lawson picked up the defensive effort, recording 13 and 12 digs while Martinez had two of the three team blocks on the night.

"When we inserted Sarah into the lineup, she was a secret weapon," Poyer said on Tuioti-Mariner. "I knew what she was capable of doing. People don't think Jenny is going to be able to do very much, based on her size. She was playing against a 6-3 middle and held her own. I'm not surprised by what she's doing because she works hard. We tell her what she needs to do and she does it. Tiana did an excellent job. People think when you're setting to Lauren and Courtney that there's no pressure, but she did a great job of putting it on the spot.

"Setting the ball was easy to do tonight because our passing was so on-point," Roebuck said on her career performance. "Playing with great hitters makes my job very easy. This was a fun game. We're doing really well right now. We're playing together and keeping the energy up. Hopefully, we just keep improving."

"All of us were working together really well," Martinez said. "We built off the momentum from beating WT and we knew what we had to do to win. We stressed the things that worked and we all played together and played with heart."

The Greyhounds return to the court on Friday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Midwestern State. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
