PLAINVIEW, TEXAS — Facing a 14-point deficit to Wayland Baptist midway in the second half, the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (1-2) capped a 18-5 run with a fourth-quarter jumper from
Daeshi McCants to close within a single point, 46-45.
Kassandra Harris finished with a team-best 13 points and three steals, but the Flying Queens (3-0) pulled away for a 63-49 win at the Hutcherson Center.
The contest featured four lead changes as the Greyhounds pursued their first road win in the series. Eastern also was looking for its first win over WBU since a 78-70 decision in the 1999 season.
The Turning Point
- Trailing 8-4 in the opening quarter, the Hounds went on a 7-0 run capped by five points from McCants to seize an 11 -8 lead
- Wayland Baptist responded with a 17-4 run over the ensuing 7:44 to take the lead for good
- Late in the third quarter, WBU took its largest lead, 41-27, on a Maci Merket trey
- Brandi Gomez responded with her own trey to spark an 18-5 run
- Kassandra Harris scored nine points during ENMU's run
- McCants scored on a layup with 8:47 left in the game
- WBU scored the next seven points and pulled away
In the Numbers
- Eastern held a slim 16-15 edge in points off turnovers
- The Hounds had a 13-9 lead in second chance points, despite being outrebounded 41-36
- McCants finished with nine points, six rebounds, four blocks and a steal
- Gomez added six points for the Hounds, while Amari Dennis chipped in five points
- Deborah Van Dijk paced three WBU players in double figures with 18 points
