‘Hounds Survive in Double Overtime to Win Third-Straight

CANYON, Texas –The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team survived a game tying three-quarter court shot at the end of the first overtime before holding on for an 89-86 win in double overtime over Wayne State at the PAK-A-SAK Tournament hosted by West Texas A&M. The three-straight wins is the most by the Greyhounds since January 2014 and improves the team's record to 4-3 on the season.

After knocking down the game-winning three against Southern Nazarene on Friday, senior guard CoRnell Neal dropped 29 on 8-of-22 shooting, and added 11 points from the charity stripe, going 11-of-14. Additionally, Neal sparked the offense for eight points in the two overtime periods. Junior forward Andre Hughes picked up his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Chris Lewis pulled down a game-high 15 boards, including eight offensive rebounds that led to the majority of Eastern's 29 second-chance points. Lewis also played all but three minutes in the contest.

Despite the early season woes at the free throw line, the Greyhounds saw limited opportunities in the first half, only going to the stripe twice. In the second half and both overtime periods, ENMU went to the line a whopping 44 times, and knocking down 32, good for 76 percent.

The Green and Silver went into the half trailing by 10, but produced 43 points in the second half despite shooting just over 35 percent. After falling behind by 13 early in the second period, Eastern mounted a 24-9 run over a 10 minute stretch to regain the lead (51-49). With 26 remaining in regulation, Neal went to the line down two and converted both free throws to force the first overtime period.

In the first overtime, the Greyhounds held a one point lead with Shelton at the line. The Killeen, Texas, native came up big by putting both through the cylinder to extend the lead to three with a second to play. On the ensuing inbound play, Wayne State's Vance Janssen was able to get a dribble in before launching a full-court shot from inside the three-point line. With the ball in the air for seemingly an eternity, the Wildcats guard tied the game at 77 to force a second overtime.

Shelton came up with the team's first four points in the second overtime and senior guard Javaan Mumtaz drilled another clutch three with three minutes to go to put the 'Hounds up four. Senior guard Chris Wyms knocked down a pair of free throws with four seconds to play and the ENMU defense did not allow lighting to strike twice with a well-contested three point shot at the buzzer, securing the team's third-straight win, 89-86.

The Greyhounds open up Lone Star Conference play on Thursday, Dec. 1 when both the men and women travel to Odessa to take on UT-Permian Basin. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. (MT).
