GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico softball team gave up seven runs late in their contest against Oklahoma Panhandle State Sunday, ultimately losing in the final inning 13-12.
After putting up four runs in the second inning, the Aggies (7-9) but up four of their own runs immediately after to tie the game. The Hounds (7-7) would then score in their next three innings to take a 10-4 lead.
A huge comeback in the fifth inning though would give OPSU a one run lead. The Aggies scored seven runs off seven hits in the inning.
After Natasha Kissell got the Greyhounds out of the tight inning, they would tie the matchup in the sixth and go on to take a lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. OPSU would get a leadoff single to start the inning, followed by a walk and another single that tied the ballgame.
The final at bat hit a deep ball to right field while the throw was on line to the cutoff, the damage would done as the winning run would cross the plate.
"Our pitching struggled this game," said head coach Katie Welborn. "Hitting, we came through when we needed to. Overall we just could have done better obviously."
ENMU recorded 13 hits while OPSU had 16. Morgan Green and Mariah Rodriguez led the team with three RBIs each, with Rodriguez recording a game-high three hits. Five Greyhounds recorded multiple hits.
ENMU will return home to Portales before starting Lone Star Conference play with a matchup against Midwestern State Friday, Feb. 26. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).
