PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team snapped a five game losing streak Saturday, beating out Adams State in both games of their doubleheader, 10-9 and 14-3.
The Hounds moved to 7-6 on the year, while to double loss for the Grizzlies pushed them back to 3-9. Greyhound Coach David Gomez said, "It was a big day for us, coming off a tough week in California and then Arizona. It good to get a couple wins and get back over 500."
Daniel Ward continued to dominate from the plate, hitting an out of this world .833 on the day, going 5-for-6 on the day while drawing four intentional walks. His 1.167 slugging percentage was closely followed by Justin Paul, who went 4-for-7 with the team's only home run.
"It's going to happen more and more, Ward's batting average is out of the stratosphere right now," said Gomez on Ward being walked four times. "He has that spot in the lineup where we normally have some guys on base, so he can do some damage with the way he is playing right now."
Dylan Nault had himself quite the day, hitting an even .500 while driving in seven RBIs between the two contests. Tregra Williams and Mike McNicholl recorded averages of .556 and .500, respectively. As a team, ENMU hit .477 on the day.
GAME ONE
ENMU Ace Jerrot Gray struggled early in his start from the mound, giving up six earned runs in three innings of work. Eastern would find themselves down 7-2 before Zach Shank relieved the besieged Gray. Shank proceeded to throw four shutout innings before giving up two runs in the eighth inning and would go on to get his first win of the season.
The Greyhounds would continually chip away at the Grizzly lead until a two run sixth inning would give them a lead they would never relinquish. "We didn't quite get the start we were looking for, but Shank came in and he showed very well, changing speeds and throwing strikes," said Gomez. "Then our offense caught up and brought us back in it, so proud of the effort there down the stretch."
Alec Lemmon came in to finish the Grizzlies, throwing two scoreless innings. Lemmon was credited with his first save of the season.
GAME TWO
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, The Greyhounds exploded with five runs in the second, followed by eight runs scored in the third inning. Most all of the damage done in the third was with two outs, with a Greyhound batter reaching on an error early in the inning.
J'Daylin Jackson threw for five innings, giving up only two earned runs and fanning four batters. Kiegan Basso came in as relief, striking out two batters while allowing only one score.
Gomez said, "Jackson is a very successful kid, so were excited to see him having success right now. He is very competitive and showed that today, then Basso came in a shut the door for him."
Nault went 3-for-5 in the second contest, driving in a team-high four RBIs. Ward, who did most of his damage from the plate in the first game, was intentionally walked three times in the game, flying out once and getting an RBI single when he was pitched to.
The Greyhounds will resume their series with Adams State on Sunday, with this first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).
