Wednesday, February 03, 2016

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (8-11; LSC 3-6) closed the second quarter of Wednesday's Lone Star Conference game on an 18-3 run and cruised to a 67-42 win over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-14; LSC 0-9). The Hounds grabbed a season-high 54 rebounds and held a 20-rebound advantage.

The Hounds have won the last four meetings against Texas A&M-Kingsville and seven of the last eight. Kassandra Harris finished with 20 points and seven rebounds to notch her fourth game of the season with at least 20 points.

A pair of Kaylee Kana free throws early in the second quarter staked the Javelinas to their final lead, 21-19, before a Jordyn Cooper trey ignited an 18-3 run by Eastern to close the final 8:17 of the half. The run allowed ENMU to take a 37-24 edge into the intermission.

A 9-3 run early in the third quarter allowed Texas A&M-Kingsville to close within 11 points, on a short jumper from Kana with 6:08 left in the period. The Hounds immediately responded with a jumper from Harris and a fast break bucket from Sarah Stinnett. The baskets sparked an 11-2 ENMU run over the next 5:43, to give Eastern a 55-35 lead on Harris's driving layup with two seconds on the clock. Eastern continued to pull away in the fourth quarter.

The Greyhound defense registered its top defensive performance of the season and held the Javelinas to a .237 shooting percentage. The game also marked the second time this season ENMU limited a team to 42 points or less (41 at Western New Mexico). The Hounds also blocked a season-high nine shots, with four coming from Eliza Martinez. Sarah Stinnett poured in 12 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists, and had four steals. Jordyn Cooper chipped in nine points, while Mikaehla Connor finished with eight points and a pair of blocked shots. Johna McClelland, Brittany Gutierrez, Harris, and Jaylyn Cooper each had seven rebounds. TaSheena Moore paced the Javelinas with eight points.
