SAN ANGELO, TEXAS — An early second half run wasn't enough to cut into a 20 point first half deficit Saturday night for the Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team, who found themselves on the wrong end of a 100-67 contest too Angelo State.
Three Greyhounds (6-15, 2-7 LSC) scored in double digits, with Brady Patterson leading the way with 14 points. Lawrence Domingo and Javaan Mumtaz poured in 12 and 11 points, respectively, with Domingo also pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Stedman Allen led all scorers with 21 points for the Rams (17-4, 5-4 LSC).
Patterson has been playing increasingly better for Eastern, with the true freshman starting point guard starting to really make a name for himself around the Lone Star. Greyhound head coach Stott Carter said, "Brady is really playing much better, especially when he is just a freshman. We ask him to play a lot of minutes and he is just getting better every game."
Heading into the locker room at half, the Hounds found themselves down 50-30. Never giving up, Eastern rallied and brought the game to with 14 until several Greyhound misses followed by a few Ram made baskets pushed the lead back up to 20 and eventually more.
"It's just so funny how in this game a 20 point game can come down to one or two possession; it can change that quick," said Carter. "Similarly to our win over Commerce, today seemed to be just that except we just didn't get any bounces and couldn't get our shots to go down."
While both teams shot right around 34 percent from beyond the arc, the Rams lit up the scoreboard with their field goals, hitting 61 percent of their total shots (33-54). Comparatively, ENMU went 19-55 (35 percent).
While the rebounding margin saw the Rams finish with +20 (44-24 rebounds), Angelo only snagged nine offensive boards and didn't get too many second chance points. ENMU's poor shooting did allow the Rams to get out on the break however, scoring 14 fast break points in the contest.
Foul trouble also crippled the Greyhounds, with seven Eastern players ending the game with four or more fouls – two would foul out. Due to foul troubles the Greyhound bigs were hampered, which resulted in Angelo outscoring the Hounds in the paint 46-18.
Eastern will now head back to Portales before turning around and heading to Lawton, Okla., for a matchup with Cameron on Thursday, Feb. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (MT).
