LAWTON, OKLA. — After a back-and-forth game in the Lone Star Conference series finale at Cameron, the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (10-22; LSC 3-13) had back-to-back hits from
Morgan Green and Marleyna Piñon in the seventh inning, to bring the game-tying run to the plate. The Aggies (24-9; LSC 9-3) escaped the jam to hold on for an 11-8 win, after winning the opener by an 8-0 score, Sunday at McMahon Field.
Kyra Sirag continued her strong play over the four game series and batted .500 for the weekend. Over the first four LSC series, the senior is batting .469, and currently stands in sixth on the ENMU career list for base hits (197). Cameron improved to 9-1 at home this season. The Aggies were in the receiving votes section of the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, entering this weekend's series.
The Eastern New Mexico University softball team will conclude its road trip on Tuesday, with a non-conference doubleheader at Lubbock Christian. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. MT.
Game 2Audrey Velasquez and
Erikka Burke led of the finale with back to back singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Sirag.
Susannah Chandler followed with a two-run single up the middle, to give the Hounds their first lead of the series. Later in the inning, Simone Laurence drove a two-run double to the right-centerfield gap to balloon ENMU's lead to 4-0.
The Aggies capitalized on three walks and a hit batsmen in the bottom of the first inning and took a 5-4 lead on a two-run single from Nikki Horton. Carly Allerheilgen attempted to go from first to third base on the play, but was tagged out to end the inning on a relay throw from Chandler.
Two outs into the top of the second inning, Sirag drew a walk, followed by a single from Chandler. Green followed with the second of her three hits, to drive in a pair of runs, while Piñon had an RBI single to give Eastern a 7-5 lead. Cameron continued the shootout with the Hounds, and capitalized on an error and walk to seize an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Eastern responded in top of the third inning, with
Natasha Kissell reaching base on an error, with one out. After a single from Velasquez and walk to Burke loaded the bases, Sirag delivered a game-tying RBI hit to left field. Cameron took advantage of a Greyhound error to seize the lead for good in the fourth frame and capitalized on three walks to push their advantage to 11-8 in the sixth.
Green and Piñon led off the ENMU seventh with back-to-back hits, to bring the game-tying run to the batter's box with no outs, but CU relief pitcher Alyssa Osterdock escaped the jam to earn her sixth win of the season.
Green batted three-for-four with two RBIs. Eastern had seven runs on nine hits in two innings against Aggie starter Sonora Zuckerman, but managed one run on four hits against Osterdock the rest of the way. Laurenz's first-inning double was the only extra-base hit by either team.
Game 1CU's Emily Wasinger limited Eastern to a first inning single from Burke in the opener. Laurenz reached base on a third-inning walk and an error in the fifth inning. The Aggies seized a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer from Zuckerman. After a single run in the third inning and four in the bottom of the fourth, the game was ended after ENMU's at bat in the fifth frame.
