KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team managed to swipe an early lead from Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday, but after several back-and-forth innings they would eventually lose 11-5.
Leading the Greyhounds (10-32, 3-24 LSC) from the plate, Daniel Ward and Dylan Nault both recorded two hits and one RBI each, while Keenan Dodd led the team with two RBIs. ENMU totaled eight hits and five RBIs on the day.
In contrast, the Javelinas (28-13, 18-9 LSC) had 15 hits and of their 11 runs scored, 10 were batted in. Pitching was the big difference in the contest, with both of the team's starters having a tough going of things.
Alec Lemmon went 2.1 innings from the mound, striking out four batters but giving up nine hits and six earned runs. Preston Plovanich for Kingsville threw 6.2 innings, allowing five earned runs and eight hits.
In relief, Chris Miranda-Carr had a very strong outing, throwing five and one third innings while only allowing five hits and two earned runs. He also fanned four batters.
The Greyhounds fell behind by a single run after the first inning, but quickly bounced back scoring two of their own runs in the following inning. The Javelinas wouldn't give up their lead easily though, scoring two of their own in the bottom of the same inning.
After tying the game in the top of the third, things quickly went downhill for the Hounds as Kingsville would score three runs in the bottom of the inning. While ENMU would cut into Kingsville's lead with multiple scores in the fifth and sixth innings, a big four run eighth by the Javelinas would end any chance for a comeback.
Eastern will resume their matchup with Kingsville Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).
