SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team couldn't manage to get around Angelo State's pitching for a second day in a row, dropping both games of their doubleheader Saturday, 7-0 and 13-3, despite having three players with multi-hit games in the matchup.
Tregra Williams led the team going three-for-seven from the plate, recording at least one hit in each game. Marcus Martinez and Paul Tapia both had two hits in the second game of the day. For the two contests, the Greyhounds (10-27, 3-20 LSC) combined for 10 hits – two in the first game and eight in the final.
The Rams (23-14, 16-7 LSC) had another productive day from the mound, holding the Hounds scoreless in game one before giving up three scores in the second contest. They finished the outing with 22 strikeouts, led by their ace Bryce Zak with 14 K's.
Alec Lemmon, who was the Greyhound starter for game one, threw three good innings before having a tough going of things in the fourth, giving up four runs. He did remain in the game however and finished his day in the fifth inning, allowing no more runs.
The second game saw the Rams jump out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the opening inning, followed by three runs in the next and four in the third. Jarron Hill and Keenan Dodd both pitched well in relief, combining for 2.1 innings with the former allowing only one run and the latter giving up none.
Eastern's only runs of the day came in the top of the fourth inning in game two, when Jacob Cluff hit a leadoff double. Martinez followed Cluff with a double of his own to left center, scoring the first run.
After a Dodd single followed by a pitching change, Tapia scalded one up the middle to load the bases. Chris Padilla and Dylan Nault each reached on fielder's choice, scoring the Greyhounds final two runs before the end of the inning.
The Hounds will head back to Portales and prepare for a home series against Tarleton State. The first matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. (MT) Friday, April 15, followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. (MT).
