CANYON, TEXAS —The opening game of Saturday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader saw the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (11-35; LSC 3-21) use a two-out rally in the first inning to seize a lead against second-ranked West Texas A&M (44-2; LSC 26-2).
Susannah Chandler and
Morgan Green had back-to-back hits to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs rallied for a 10-2 win, before they claimed an 8-0 victory for the series sweep at Shaeffer Park.
The Eastern New Mexico University softball team will play a non-conference doubleheader at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
Game 1After WT starter Kilee Halbert retired the first two batters of the game, Burke was struck by the first pitch of her at bat, to give the Greyhounds their first base runner. She scored from first base on a
Susannah Chandler double to centerfield, while Chandler came home on a single from Green. Eastern's 2-0 lead would stand until West Texas A&M's Brittany Cruz cracked a leadoff homer in the third inning, and Kourtney Coveney came home with the tying run on a sacrifice fly after a two-out triple. The Lady Buffs seized the lead in the next inning and pulled away for the 10-2 win. After Coveney scored in the sixth inning, the game ended due to WT's eight-run lead.
Chandler, Green, and
Katie Ripple each had a hit for the Hounds.
Mariah Rodriguez added a sacrifice bunt for ENMU in the fifth inning. Halbert went the distance for WT and improved to 18-1 on the season.
Game 2Burke tossed a four hitter against West Texas A&M in the nightcap, and the Hounds held a 5-4 edge in total hits.
Audrey Velasquez nearly scored from second base on a two-out hit from Chandler, which would have given ENMU a first-inning lead for the third straight game. Hardin's throw to the plate from centerfield caught Velasquez in a rundown, which led to the third out.
The Lady Buffs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Ashley Hardin scored on a wild pitch, and Allie Smith came home on a sacrifice fly. After a four-run fourth inning, WT added two runs in the fifth to end the game.
Green and Chandler each had two hits for ENMU. Chandler has 16 multi-hit games this season, while Green has registered 13. Tori Bayer scattered five hits and moved to 12-0 on the season.
