WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team made history on Wednesday evening, earning the program's first-ever victory in the Lone Star Conference tournament. The Greyhounds (5-8-6) knocked out fourth-seeded Midwestern State (11-7-1) with a 4-0 shutout at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Â
ENMU now heads to San Angelo for a semifinal matchup against the league's regular season champion, Angelo State. Kickoff against the Rambelles is tabbed for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. With an additional victory, the Green and Silver would move on to the championship game at ASU on Sunday, Nov. 5, at noon.
"
Kenya Brooke has been extremely important in our attack recently," ENMU Head Coach
Ryan Spence said. "She's had three goals in her last three games. Coming into tonight, we stuck to our gameplan and the girls defended for their life. In the end, we played our system very well and getting early goals has really built our confidence."
Â
The four goals against the Mustangs were the most ENMU has scored in any matchup against MSU. Additionally, Wednesday was the first time since 2006 Midwestern State surrendered four goals.
Â
Entering the matchup, the Hounds had scored just two goals in five trips to the LSC Tournament and had failed to score in the last two championships. Despite the prior offensive troubles in the tournament, ENMU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against MSU.
Kenya Brooke found the back of the net off an
Ariel Lopez corner just 1:46 into the matchup and the Green and Silver never looked back. Later in the first half, ENMU came inches away on a pair of attempts from
Erin McAnarney and
Keyara Zuniga as the ball caromed off the post.
Â
McAnarney would eventually redeem herself early in the second half to give Eastern a bit of a cushion. The Albuquerque, N.M., native scored from the left wing inside the box for her first goal of her senior campaign in the 52
nd minute.
Â
Brooke broke free for another goal in the 73
rd-minute.
Samantha Fabela found the sophomore on a throughball to the left-wing where Brooke fired from 15 yards out to extend the lead to 3-0. Freshman
Caitlyn Schmidt capped the scoring 10 minutes later with her first goal of the season. Lopez picked up Schmidt on the right-side from 10 yards out to move the score to 4-0.
Â
Keeper
Alejandra Camarillo made seven saves for her fifth clean sheet of the season, facing a dozen shots against the Mustangs.
