LAS VEGAS, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (1-2) stepped up defensively in its first win of the season and made a statement. The Hounds limited New Mexico Highlands (1-3) to a .222 shooting percentage and earned a 53-34 victory Saturday afternoon at the John A. Wilson Complex.
Kaylee Edgemon led the way with 11 points, while
Shelby Jones poured in 10 points.
On the Defensive Side
- Eastern's 34 points allowed against a NCAA Division II opponent were the fewest since a 68-36 win over Adams State on November 26, 2006
- The last time the Hounds held any team under 40 points came in a 75-36 victory over University of the Southwest (NAIA) in the 2013 season
Inside the Series
- The victory was ENMU's third straight in the series with New Mexico Highlands
- Eastern improved to 37-8 against the Cowgirls
- On the road, the Hounds are 14-6 against NMHU
Inside the Numbers
- The Hounds held a decisive 39-27 edge in rebounding which included an 18-8 lead on the offensive glass
- Eastern held an 18-9 advantage in points off turnovers
- The Greyhounds 11 steals nearly doubled the previous season high (6 against South Dakota Mines)
- Daeshi McCants chipped in six points and five rebounds
- Jasmine Hotchkins added eight points
- Mikaehla Connor had five points, nine caroms and a pair of steals
- Ari Baca paced Highlands with 11 points and seven boards
