PORTALES, NM — This week, the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (3-2) not only will open its home schedule, but will begin Lone Star Conference play. Last season, the Greyhounds posted a 16-4 mark in LSC competition and earned a share of the league title for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
On Thursday, the Hounds will tip off against University of Texas of the Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m. MT, in a contest sponsored by U.S. Bank. Saturday's game against West Texas A&M is sponsored by Dr. Peter L. Thompson, DDS, and will begin at 2 p.m.
Hoisting the Banner
Prior to tipoff on Thursday, the Eastern New Mexico University athletic department will honor the 2016-17 LSC Championships team by raising the championship banner into the rafters of Greyhound Arena. Last season, ENMU posted the third 20-win season in program history and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

KSEL 1450 AM will broadcast the game on Thursday, while 105.9 FM will broadcast Saturday's game, and the station will provide an audio webcast on their website.

The Greyhounds are on a three-game win streak, which included a back-and-forth contest with Colorado State-Pueblo. Eastern averages a positive 3.2 scoring differential along with a +7.8 rebounding differential.
Jasmine Hotchkins leads the Hounds with 10.2 points per game and is hitting 50 percent of her three-point shots.
Mikaehla Connor is right behind with 10 points, 6.7 boards and 1.6 assists per game.

In his fifth season, Head Coach
Josh Prock ranks second on the ENMU career win list. Under his direction, Eastern has a 48-66 record, which included the program's third 20-win season and second LSC title.

University of Texas of the Permian Basin picked up its first win of the season on Monday night and has played an extremely competitive schedule. Among the Falcons first three games were matchups with Lubbock Christian, Fort Lewis and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
???????Khali Pippins-Tyron has paced UT Permian Basin with 16 points per game along with 11 steals. Kayla Bretherton has chipped in 7.5 points per contest, while Jackie Perez has averaged 2.5 assists per game. UTPB has scored 15.5 points off turnovers per game this season.
Eastern is 3-1 against UT Permian Basin and have won the last three meetings. Last season's run to the Lone Star Conference title began with a 63-61 win in Odessa, Texas.
Daeshi McCants drained a go-ahead free throw with 20 seconds left, and
Jasmine Hotchkins followed with another free throw with two seconds left. The Hounds charged to a 20-point lead in the first quarter after shooting .526 from the floor.
Mikaehla Connor paced the Hounds with 16 points, while
Amari Joseph chipped in 13 points.
Later in the season,
Brandi Gomez poured in 15 points to pace the Hounds to an 81-56 win at home in the rematch.

West Texas A&M ranked fifth in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll and currently boasts a 5-0 record. The Lady Buffs will open Lone Star Conference play on Thursday night at Western New Mexico, prior to visiting Greyhound Arena.
Lexy Hightower paces the WT with 12.8 points and two assists per game. Madison Parker is close behind with 9.2 points and seven rebounds per contest. The Lady Buffs have averaged 17-point differential in their five wins this season.
Last season, the Greyhounds split with West Texas A&M and earned their first road win in the series since January 10, 1981.
Eastern used a 20-point effort from
Daeshi McCants and 19 points from
Mikaehla Connor to rally from a 12-point deficit for a 72-67 win at First United Bank Center on December 3, 2016.
Brandi Gomez also chipped in 14 points. The Hounds led for 5:50 of play, while then seventh-ranked WT led for 29:54.
Coming Home
The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, December 7, to open a three-game road swing. The trip will open with a contest at Texas A&M-Commerce at 10 a.m. MT. Contests against Tarleton State and St. Mary's will follow.
