PORTALES, NM — The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team (17-5; LSC 13-2) used a 35-point effort from its bench to pick up a wild 76-71 victory over visiting Western New Mexico University (4-18; LSC 0-15), in Lone Star Conference action, Tuesday evening. The victory set a new ENMU single-season record with 13 conference victories and moved the Hounds to 9-2 at home this season.
The win was ENMU's fourth straight in the series with the Mustangs and moved the Hounds to 19-5 all-time against WNMU. Eastern also holds a 12-3 advantage over Western at Greyhound Arena.
Johna McClelland registered a career-best 15 points in the game, while
Brandi Gomez and
Jasmine Hotchkins had career-bests, with eight and five rebounds, respectively. The Greyhound bench outscored WNMU's reserves by a 35-4 margin.
The Key Run
- Eastern held a 49-47 lead late in the third quarter, when Sarina Johnson hit a pair of free throws
- The free throws sparked a 19-6 Greyhound run over the ensuing 5:15 of play
- Gomez capped the surge with a short jumper to give Eastern a 68-53 edge with 6:31 to play
- Western answered with a 12-1 run, which included five points with Jade Borelho at the free-throw line after a series of technical fouls
- After the run pulled WNMU within four points, the teams traded baskets, with the Hounds holding on for the win

- It also was the third time in the last four games ENMU has led at halftime
