Burke Smashes Eighth Homer of Season, Rogers Tosses One-Hitter in Win over Midwestern State

Saturday, March 4, 2017

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS —Freshman pitcher Kaylee Rogers blanked Midwestern State (10-13; LSC 3-6) and allowed one hit, as the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (13-14; LSC 6-3) split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds claimed an 11-0 win in the nightcap after they dropped a 6-3 decision in the opener at Mustangs Park.

The weekend marked the first time the Greyhounds claimed a LSC series against Midwestern State and the third overall victory in the all-time series for ENMU. In the nightcap, the Greyhounds matched an all-time series high with 11 runs, a feat accomplished last season in a 13-11 setback. For the season, ENMU is 5-1 on the road in league play. Cameron Conrad extended her hit streak to 13 consecutive games.

Game 2
The win in the nightcap was Rogers' ninth of the season and her third shutout. The freshman pitcher matched her season-best performance (against NM Highlands on Feb 15) and held the Mustangs to a single base hit. Over five innings, Rogers faced just three batters over the minimum.

Eastern wasted little time getting on the board, and struck with a RBI double from Kylee Keller in the top of the first inning and doubled the lead on an Ashley Lopez single in the second frame.

The third inning saw the Hounds push the lead to 4-0 after a RBI double from Samantha Brockman, followed by a run-scoring single from Kamalani Peneku. After tacking on two more runs in the fourth, ENMU sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth and pulled away with five runs.

The Hounds pounded out a season-best 17 hits for the game with Susannah Chandler and Samantha Brockman having three apiece. In the fourth inning, Erikka Burke pulled into a tie for the LSC lead, with her eighth homer of the season. Burke, Kylee Keller, Brockman, and Courtney Vigil also had doubles.

Game 1
In the opener, MSU sent eight batters to the plate and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A solo homer from Laurie Lindgren extended the Mustang lead, before the Hounds got ono the board in the top of the third frame.

Midwestern State starter Kelsey Knox retired the first two batters in the Greyhound third inning but Eastern sent eight batters to the plate. Peneku singled in ENMU's first run of the game and Vigil followed with a two-run single. MSU maintained their 4-3 lead and added two insurance runs on a Taylor Bermudes homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Conrad batted three-for-three, while Keller had two base hits.

Up Next
