Hounds Advance To LSC Tournament Semifinal With 2-0 Win Over Texas A&M-Commerce

ROCKWALL, Texas – A third time change and a switch in venue due to inclement weather didn't keep the fifth-seeded Eastern New Mexico women's soccer team down as a pair of goals by Keyara Zuniga led the Hounds to a 2-0 victory in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match against No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Commerce in Rockwall Wednesday night.

Early on in the opening half, the Lions got the first two opportunities to score the go-ahead goals, but back-to-back saves by freshman goalkeeper Taylor Jackson in the 23rd and 24th minutes kept the game tied at zero.

Eastern's first chance to go up came just minutes later when sophomore midfielder Victoria Nuñez fired a long shot from 35 yards out and the TAMUC keeper Caitlin Duty made a tremendous leaping save near the top right corner of the goal, forcing the ball out of bounds over the crossbar to set up an ENMU corner at the 27:41 mark.

A minute later, the Hounds struck the first blow. In the 29th minute, Nuñez made a beautiful cross from the right side into the goal box and Zuniga headed in the go-ahead goal from 12-yards out to put Eastern up 1-nil.

Anahi Hernandez had the only other scoring opportunity for either team in the remainder of the half, but her shot at the 37:38 mark was saved and Eastern went into the halftime locker room with the one goal advantage.

Eastern controlled the pace of the match in the first half, outshooting the Lions by a 9-6 margin and a 4-2 edge in shots on-goal.

The Hounds had a fantastic opportunity to add to its lead in the 51st minute coming off a breakaway, but Hernandez's shot from the right side of the goal box just missed as it bounced off the left goal post and was kicked out by the Lions defense, keeping it at a 1-0 game.

The Lions ran into the same luck at the 56:45 mark when TAMUC's Katie Givens had a potential equalizer bounce off the goal post as well.

ENMU finally added some insurance to their lead in the 72nd minute. After the Lions were called for a foul, Zuniga was able to track down a free kick from the right side by senior mid Bailey Bosley and her shot near the left post found the back of the net to make a 2-nil Hounds advantage.

The Lions only had one more chance to make a comeback in the 76th minute, but TAMUC's Samantha Munguia's shot hit the goal post once again and Jackson made yet another phenomenal save on the follow-up shot by Leslie Campuzano to preserve the 2-0 win.

For the second consecutive year, Eastern has advanced to the LSC Semifinal round after they defeated Midwestern State 4-0 in last year's quarterfinals.

Both teams finished with 13 shots in the match, but Eastern was more efficient with their shots, placing seven on-goal to just four for the Lions.

Zuniga led the scoring efforts for Eastern, scoring her team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season off of three shots and the two that were on-goal found the back of the net.

She also became the second Greyhound to score multiple goals in a match this season, just five days after junior forward Charlotte Collins-Blaize scored a pair of goals in a 3-0 win over UT-Permian Basin. With the two scores, she became the 15th different player in program history to score multiple goals in a match.

Hernandez added a season-high five shots and three shots on-goal.

In goal for the Hounds, Jackson pitched her sixth shutout of the season and came up with four big saves in the match.

The Greyhounds will look to keep the momentum going as they will now head to Canyon, Texas for a 6:30 p.m. LSC semifinal matchup against top-seeded West Texas A&M on Friday, Nov. 2.
