SAN ANGELO, Texas – In a battle between two of the top three teams in the Lone Star Conference, the Eastern New Mexico women's soccer program couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Hounds fell to Angelo State 4-0 Friday night.
The Hounds (4-4-2, 2-2-1 LSC) had a scoring opportunity early in the contest, but sophomore midfielder Kierra Diaz's shot hit the crossbar in the 11th minute, keeping the match scoreless.
At the 26:09 mark, Angelo State (6-4-1, 4-1 LSC) grabbed ahold of the lead on a goal by Trenadey Scott, making it a 1-nil. Just minutes later, the Rams added to it on a goal by Mackenzie Broderick in the 29th minute, stretching the ASU advantage to two.
Just two seconds before the halftime horn, senior midfielder Kaitlyn Caro put a shot on-goal, but it was saved by ASU goalkeeper Kira Miller as the Hounds went into the half trailing 2-nil.
Unfortunately for the Hounds, the Rams spared little time building to their lead in the second half. In the 49th minute, ASU's Avery McNeme put her first goal of the season past the keeper to stretch the Rams advantage to three.
The Hounds couldn't find an answer for stopping Scott in the second half as the Lone Star Conference scoring leader added one more for Angelo State at the 62:18 mark to make 4-nil.
Despite losing the 4-0 edge in goals scored, the Greyhounds outshot the Rams 14-13 in the contest, including a 7-6 edge in shots on-goal.
Sophomore midfielder Caitlyn Schmidt led the ENMU attack with four shots, placing two on-goal and sophomore defender Hayden Zuniga put two shots on-goal as well.
The Hounds will look to bounce back on Sunday as Eastern will head to Odessa, Texas for a noon match against UT-Permian Basin.
