Martinez Leads Hounds to Second Straight Rivalry Victory

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico volleyball team defeated their second rival in a row with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Western New Mexico.

The Hounds (6-8, 4-3 LSC) were led by senior Jennifer Martinez, who had a career night against the Mustangs (6-7, 2-2 LSC), totaling 17.0 points on the evening with 11 kills and seven blocks. Eastern New Mexico held steady control throughout the match as the largest point deficit they faced at any point throughout the match was just three points.

Eastern recorded their second highest team hitting percentage of the season with a .277 mark. The Hounds didn't allow a single service ace throughout the match and committed just 13 attack errors in 101 total attacks.

A 10-4 opening advantage provided the insurance the Hounds needed to cruise to a 25-19 opening set victory. Western New Mexico tied the set up with 6-1 run leading up to the 16-16 mark of the set, but five straight Hound points coming out of an Eastern timeout extended the Hounds advantage to 21-16.

The Hounds eventually finished off the set victory with a 25-19 total.

After conceding the opening point of the second set, Eastern never trailed the remainder of the second set, extending the advantage to as many as six at the 19-13 mark. The Mustangs narrowed the lead down to four at 23-19, by two kills from Martinez eventually gave the Hounds a 25-20 victory.

Neither team budged for the majority of the third set as the point differential never reached more than three points either way before a 7-1 run to close out the set in favor of Eastern put the exclamation point on their second straight victory over a rival opponent in as many matches.

Martinez recorded an attack percentage of .563 throughout the match with 11 kills on 16 swings while sophomore Jasmine Gannon added 11 kills to the offensive output as well. Juniors Lauryn Bresnahan and Christelle Kialanda each totaled five kills in the match while senior Alba Ontiveros recorded a team high 13 digs for the match.

Freshman Jaedynn Devoux continued her solid stretch of play with six kills to go along with six digs as well.

Eastern New Mexico will look to secure their third victory in a row tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. with a match scheduled against UT-Permian Basin inside Greyhound Arena.
