SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team opened up their weekend on the road with an 88-69 loss on the road at Angelo State.
The Rams (10-3, 2-1 LSC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back despite a season-high 22 points from senior
Zach Parker of Eastern New Mexico (6-7, 3-2 LSC). Parker made 7-of-16 attempts from the field and connected on four three pointers to lead all scorers for the game.
Angelo State got off to a quick start offensively, connecting on nine of their first 14 attempts from the field to jump out to a 22-10 lead, forcing an Eastern timeout just outside of the 10 minute mark of the first half. The Hounds answered with 13 points over the span of the next three minutes of the half to draw the deficit back to single digits at 29-21.
Eastern was unable to keep pace with Angelo State throughout the closing minutes of the first half as the Rams extended their lead to 49-28 at the break.
Angelo State shot 48 percent (30-of-53) from the field for the game and limited the Hounds to just 28 points in the opening half. Eastern showed grit in the second half, outscoring the Rams 41-39 in the second half, but couldn't overcome the slow start in the opening minutes.
Turnovers continued to plague Eastern New Mexico throughout the second half as they recorded a total of 21 for the game and failed to bring the lead back down to single digits. An efficient start to the second half for Eastern narrowed the lead down to just 13, but Angelo State quickly answered and cruised to the victory down the stretch.
Senior
Maurice Coleman led the team with five assists for the contest while junior
Darius Sawyer totaled six rebounds and seven points. Sophomore
Devin Pullum shot 50 percent (2-of-4) from the three-point line to finish with eight points and three assists.
Eastern New Mexico will have one more road test against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon before returning home for the first time in over a month next weekend for games on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon inside Greyhound Arena.
