LAREDO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico scored a penalty kick goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the game and put away the golden goal at the 102
nd minute mark of the match to win 3-2 at Texas A&M-International.
Desiree Morgas buried the penalty kick opportunity in the dying seconds of the game to give Eastern New Mexico a chance in overtime. Morgas continued to play the role of hero for the Hounds in the second overtime period as she set up senior
Julia Tucker to score the game-winning goal in the 102
nd minute of the game.
The win gives the Hounds their second victory in the Lone Star Conference this season and inches Eastern New Mexico back into contention for one of seven available spots in the LSC Postseason Tournament. The win also pushes the Hounds record closer to .500 for the season at 5-6-1.
Morgas' fifth goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time for the Greyhounds as Texas A&M-International scored the go-ahead goal in the 72
nd minute. Junior
Hayden Zuniga negated a first-half score for the Dust Devils with a sliding finish after a free kick from sophomore
Carly Kowalick bounced around inside the box before Zuniga slid onto the ball and finished in the top half of the goal.
The game proved to be a balanced affair throughout as Texas A&M-International took the slight advantage in shots for the contest with 14 on the night. Senior
Kirsten Lane subbed in at the goalkeeper spot in the second half and withstood nine shots from the Dust Devils in the half while making three saves.
After Morgas made the Dust Devils pay late in regular time, Texas A&M-International was the only team to record a shot in the first overtime period in which Lane corralled for a save. The Dust Devils would make one more shot attempt in the second overtime period before Tucker secured the win for Eastern New Mexico with a goal just over two minutes into the period.
The win snaps a five game losing streak for Eastern New Mexico and will make Saturday afternoon's game against St. Mary's that much more important as just five games remain on the regular-season schedule for the Greyhounds. That match-up is set to kick-off at noon in San Antonio, Texas.
