Greyhounds Unable to Capitalize on Scoring Chances, Fall in Overtime to Texas A&M-Commerce

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico women's soccer team lost by a final score of 1-0 in the first overtime period to Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon.

Eastern New Mexico was unable to capitalize on multiple quality scoring chances in the game, putting six shots on target throughout the contest. The Hounds best chance came in the final few seconds of regular time as a corner kick from Eastern bounced around in front of the Lion goal before time eventually expired.

The Greyhounds out-shot Texas A&M-Commerce by a final total of 14-to-6, including eight shots in the second half compared to just one shot from the Lions. The loss drops the Hounds to 4-2-1 on the season and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play.

Sophomore Desiree Morgas provided the best scoring chance for the Greyhounds in the 30th minute as she broke away in the box thanks to a nice feed from freshman Josefina Villa, but couldn't finish the one-on-one chance with the keeper. Morgas and junior Brianna Remedios provided the two on target shots for the Hounds in an opening half during which both team's recorded a pair of shots on goal.

The second half proved to be all Eastern New Mexico as they limited the Lions to just a single shot in the second half while recording eight of their own. Freshman Lauren DesCamp had the chance of the second half on a breakaway towards the right side of the goal, but couldn't put away the finish in the top corner of the net as Texas A&M-Commerce keeper Jen Peters had a spectacular save to keep the match scoreless.

The Hounds continued to press in the second half and had another prime chance on a cross into the box from senior Julia Tucker that found the feet of Villa, but the subsequent shot right in front of the net was blocked by a Lion defender to end the scoring threat. A corner kick for the Greyhounds with just 16 seconds remaining in regular time bounced around in front of the net for the final seconds of the match before the final whistle blew, sending the contest into overtime.

Texas A&M-Commerce was able to put away the golden goal just four minutes into the overtime period.

Morgas led Eastern New Mexico with five shots for the match, three of which were on goal and saved by the keeper. Villa and junior Kierra Diaz each recorded multiple shots in the contest.

Eastern New Mexico will head to #18 Dallas Baptist on Thursday afternoon for a match scheduled for 4 p.m.
