PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico completed the second straight come from behind victory of the weekend as the Hounds took down Midwestern State by a final score of 2-1.
The Greyhounds sent six seniors out in style as sophomore
Desiree Morgas scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 71
st minute. Eastern New Mexico paired the Morgas goal with an own goal on the Mustangs just over a minute earlier to negate a 1-0 halftime advantage for Midwestern State.
In a very tightly contested defensive battle that featured just 15 shots between the two teams, costly mistakes by the Mustangs and well-timed offensive pressure from the Hounds proved to be the difference. Senior
Julia Tucker forced the defensive miscue on the own goal by the Mustangs after breaking free down the sideline and sending a low cross into the box that was deflected by a Midwestern State defender into the box to even the match up at 1-1 in the 70
th minute.
The Hounds maintained the offensive attack and made the Mustangs pay for another key mistake just moments later as a cross from senior
Jaci Sievers rattled around on the far side of the post before striking a Mustang defender's hand, allowing Morgas to step in for the penalty kick.
Morgas drilled home her second penalty kick goal in as many games in the top right corner of the goal to push the Hounds ahead 2-1, a lead in which they would maintain for the remainder of the contest. Morgas recorded four of the seven shot on goal attempts for the Hounds and is now tied for third in the Lone Star Conference with eight goals on the season.
The Hound defensive backline stood strong after allowing the lone Mustang goal just over two minutes into the contest. Junior
Hayden Zuniga moved into the top 10 of the school's all-time minutes played list after recording yet another full 90 minutes of game action.
The win also moves head coach Josh Smith into a tie for second place on the school's all-time wins list with 16 career victories.
Eastern New Mexico will have a chance to continue it's winning streak on Thursday evening with a road trip to UT Permian Basin scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick off.
