STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After dropping a 5-0 decision in the opening game of the day, the Eastern New Mexico baseball team fought back with a 7-4 win in game two to split a doubleheader at Tarleton State on Saturday.
In the first game of the non-conference doubleheader, the Hounds found themselves down early in the first after TSU's Tyler Parker hit a homer to left center field to make it a 2-0 game.
The Hounds tried to get a run back in the second when ENMU catcher Eurick Perez tried to score from second on a single up the middle by Nicholas Ankerman, but was thrown out at the plate by the Texans center fielder for the third out.
Eastern mounted another threat in the top of the third after getting runners to first and third due to Blake Frye reaching on an error before stealing second and a Malcolm Boehm single to put runners on first and third, but TSU managed to stop the ENMU threat.
The Texans tallied another run in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the sixth inning to pull away with the 5-0 win.
The Greyhounds finished the game with four hits and no errors while the Texans five runs came on 10 hits with one error.
Ankerman and Boehm recorded the Hounds hits with two apiece, each going 2-for-3 from the plate. Junior starter Joel Torres took the loss on the mound, falling to 1-2 on the season after giving up four earned runs on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
In the second game of the day, it was the Greyhounds that got off to the fast start. In the top of the first, the Hounds pushed five runs across the plate to gain the early advantage.
Senior center fielder Malcolm Smith and Boehm led off with back-to-back walks before Smith came around to score on a Texans fielding error by the first baseman to make it a 1-0 game. In the following at-bat, Eurick Perez tapped an RBI groundout to second to plate Boehm, expanding the ENMU lead to 2-0.
The Hounds were able to take advantage of another Texans error in Ankerman's at-bat as Joseph Zubia came around to score, stretching the Eastern advantage to three.
Two batters later, Eastern's designated hitter Luidinson Hidalgo crushed a two-run homer over the left field fence, his first as a member of the Greyhounds, to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
The Texans were able to get a run back in the bottom of the first as TSU hit three consecutive singles after ENMU starting pitcher Enrique Perez recorded the first two outs to trim the Eastern edge to 5-1. The run ended up being the first earned run that Perez had given up this season in 19.2 innings of work.
Tarleton State was able to threaten once again in the top of the second on back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning, but Enrique Perez was able to induce three consecutive outs in the air to keep it to a 5-1 game.
The Hounds were able to put together a threat of their own in the top of the third when Ankerman reached on an infield single and Hidalgo tallied another extra base hit with a double to right center to put runners on second and third with one out, but Tarleton State forced back-to-back pop outs to stop Eastern's threat.
The Greyhounds were able to add some insurance in the fourth as a Boehm single and a pair of walks by Zubia and Eurick Perez loaded the bases prior to Ankerman knocking in a run on an RBI groundout to put ENMU back in-front by five.
The Texans were able to get the run back in their half of the fourth, but Eastern answered right back with a Paul Tapia RBI single in the fifth to score Hidalgo to make it a 7-2 game.
Enrique Perez ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth when he gave up a leadoff walk followed by a two-run homer to TSU's designated hitter Jake Spence, shrinking the Hounds' lead to 7-4.
Greyhounds head coach David Gomez immediately went to red-hot reliever Liam Sabiston, as the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week fanned three straight batters to get out of the inning.
Sabiston efficiently took care of the Texans in the sixth inning as well, as he only faced four batters and got three to fly out around a single. Sabiston pitched a solid seventh inning as well, putting three of the four batters he faced away while stranding a two-out walk to finish off the 7-4 win.
Eastern scored its seven runs on nine hits and an error while Tarleton State's four runs came on eight hits to go with three errors.
Hidalgo had an outstanding game from the plate, slashing 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Blake Frye also finished with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 while Boehm scored a pair of runs after going 1-for-4 with a walk. Smith tallied three stolen bases in the contest, tying the team-lead in stolen bases with Ankerman at 14 on the season.
Enrique Perez picked up the win after pitching four plus innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts to move to 3-0 on the season. Sabiston was credited with his first save of the year after throwing three shutout innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while fanning four.
The Greyhounds will wrap up the four game series tomorrow as Eastern will seek a series split with a noon first pitch.
