Men's Soccer Extends Season Opening Winning Streak to Four With Overtime Victory

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team showed its resilience with a 2-1 overtime victory over Westminster (Utah) Sunday afternoon inside Trailblazer Stadium.

The Hounds where able to pressure the Griffins into making a critical defensive error in the 57th minute as Eastern benefited from an own goal from Westminster for the first score of the match. ENMU played well defensively but allowed a crucial goal with 30 seconds left on the clock, as the Griffins tied the game at 1-1 to force overtime. At the 95:46 mark, Westminster conceded a costly corner kick before sophomore Joe Conway netted the game-winner to secure the Hounds fourth win of the season.

The two squads appeared to be fairly matched as each struggled to gain any momentum in the first half as the Hounds went to the locker room with a slim 3-2 advantage in the shots column. The Hounds came out of the break with more focus and their aggressive play from the frontline forced Westminster into committing an own goal. Late in the match the Griffins were awarded a corner and sent a well-placed ball into the box.  WMU got to the ball first and sent a shot on goal that junior Ross Dalton made a tremendous save on however, the rebound went straight to the foot of a Griffins forward who scored the tying goal.

The Hounds took a corner kick of their own five minutes into the overtime period as midfielder Charlie Hackshall centered the ball to defender Joaquin Borruel who headed the ball to Conway and buried the ball in the back of the net from two yards out.

Junior goalkeeper Ross Dalton showed why he is one of the best in the Lone Star Conference after another strong performance. The Liverpool, England native totaled four saves and came out of the box on a handful of occasions to intercept through balls to thwart Westminster's offensive opportunities.

ENMU continued to rely on its swarming defense as the Hounds limited the opposition to just eight total shots. 17 field players logged minutes in the match earning a well-deserved team victory.

The Green and Silver finish their non-conference schedule next week as they play a pair of game against the University of Mary and Montana State-Billings. The Hounds will face UOM Thursday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. followed by MSB Saturday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m. with both matches being played in Bismark, N.D.
