Greyhound Men Sweep UTPB After 89-83 Home Court Win

PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team has swept Ut Permian Basin after an 89-83 home court win.

Connecting on both ends the court six Greyhounds hit double-digits while the team out-rebounded the Falcons 45-33. Mathew Mazique hit a career high 14 points in his 22 minutes of play leading the Hounds to victory.

Minutes into play, Brandon Meadows caught an offensive rebound and responded with a dunk forcing UTPB to take their first timeout as the Hounds took a 16-8 lead. Tied up with eleven minutes on the clock the Hounds became hot scoring 24 points to the Falcons 18 as a late three-pointer by Jose Serrano took the Hounds into the break leading 46-38.

Back onto the court with the position arrow pointing towards the Hounds, Garrick Sherrod drew a foul going to the line to shoot two. UTPB answered with a three pointer as they closed in on the Hounds lead tying it up 49-49.

After leading for over 17 minutes in the first half the Hounds started to fall behind the Falcons until Isaiah Murphy downed a three to tie the contest 65-65. A full court press by the Hounds, and a fast-paced offense by the Falcons, put pressure on both teams. Ibn Zaid dished out an assist to Mathew Mazique who put up two points under the basket lighting up the Hound offense.

Subbing in a fresh five, the Hounds forced back to back turnovers slowly stepping out in front of the Falcons. The free-throw line started to look familiar to Ibn Zaid as he was fouled twice in the last 40 seconds of play. Zaid easily knocked down all four charity shots connecting on the last two points of the night.

Deng Kuany once again led the Hounds rocking the glass with eight rebounds and 12 points for the night. Brandon Meadows made plays on all sides of the court finishing the night with ten points, seven rebounds and five assists.  

Jose Serrano once again had an impressive night going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, making them when it counted, for a total of 13 points for the night. Isaiah Murphy hit double digits with 12 points for the night and four assists. Ibn Zaid  finished the contest with 12 points, three assists and four rebounds.
