Portales, N.M – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball fought hard against West Texas A&M but were unable to come away with a win falling 76-71 to the Buffs.
Three Hounds hit double digits in tonight's matchup, while
Jose Serrano saw one of his best games leading the team in points scoring 16. Despite outshooting the Buffs from the free-throw line and beyond the arc, the Hounds let turnovers and fouls get the best of them.
It is said what when rival teams come to visit, there is always going to be a game on the court. In their last matchup the Hounds fell to the Buffs 93-78, and only saw a lead in the first minute of play. Tonight, the Hounds started off strong in the first quarter jumping out to a 7-0 lead with the help of steals from
Isaiah Murphy and
Ibn Zaid. The Buffs quickly responded, tying up the game and going on a 9-0 point run.
The Hounds pulled themselves together and tied it up with a three pointer from
Devin Pullum. Eastern New Mexico kept a close eye on the Buffs in the first half, forcing six turnovers and tying the game three times.
Coming into the second half of play, the Greyhounds continued their first half momentum and slowly climbed their way back to the top. With two minutes left on the clock the Hounds took their former fourteen point deficit and tied the game 68-68. Fighting hard in the last two minutes,
Garrick Sherrod took control of the ball and went in for a layup that was a couple seconds too late as the buzzer rang.
Jose Serrano finished the night with 16 points and five rebounds.
Deng Kuany was two points shy of a double-double finishing with eight points and ten rebounds.
Devin Pullum recorded ten points, four rebounds and dished out two assists.
The Greyhounds are on the road next week as they travel to Silver City, N. M to face Western New Mexico on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m. You can see the Hounds back in action on home court on Jan. 16 when they welcome Lubbock Christian to the Greyhound Arena.
