SAN ANGELO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico baseball fell to #11 Angelo State 26-3 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the three-game season opening series.
The Rams plated eight unanswered runs to open the game as they led 8-0 after two innings before the Hounds found some momentum at the plate to start the third.
Senior
Malcolm Smith sparked a two-out Greyhound rally as he utilized his blazing speed to beat out an infield single to the shortstop. Facing a 2-2 count, redshirt junior
Trevor Moses belted a ball to dead center field that took a hop over the fence for a ground rule double and pushed Smith to third base.
The very next pitch senior
Joseph Zubia made the most of his at bat with two runners in scoring position as he sent a shot to right field. The ball would have cleared the wall in right but the Angelo State outfielder knocked the ball to the grass as Smith and Moses came around to score.
Smith would finish hitting .500 on the day, going 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in a run with a double to left center at the top of the seventh inning as sophomore
Lawrence Mirabal came around to score from second base.
Freshman
James Romero tallied his first collegiate hit as he drilled a ball up the middle of the infield as Zubia and redshirt junior
Daniel Hunt also recorded base knocks to bring the Greyhound hit total to six on the day.
The High Plains squad will finish up the series tomorrow as they take Foster Field against the Rams with first pitch slated for noon.
