Baseball Records Thirteen Hits in Loss to UAFS

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball set a new season-high with 13 hits but eventually fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith 13-7 in an offensive showdown Friday afternoon.

Every Greyhound in the lineup recorded at least one base knock in the ball game as Eastern looked good at the plate in the series opener against the Lions. The Lions erupted in the bottom of the first inning with six quick runs and even though the Hounds had some success with the bat, they were unable to build a lead of their own.

Eastern's pitchers had a tough time finding the strike zone and issued nine walks while only recording three strikeouts. On the reverse side, the Green and Silver's aggressiveness at the dish turned out to be detrimental as the Hounds struck out nine times and drew just one base on balls.

ENMU committed just one error in the game but the defensive miscue proved to be a costly one as it allowed three Lions runners to safely cross the plate but the Hounds were able to get those runs back in the top of the second frame. Head Coach Riley Price showed a knack for manufacturing runs with the Hounds perfectly executing on their small ball strategies.

Third baseman Ross Montoya was able to move two runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before left fielder Blake Carter made it count with an RBI single to left field. Carter eventually stole second base with first baseman Trevor Bowden scoring from third on the ensuing throwdown. The scoring burst was capped off by an RBI double from center fielder Malcolm Smith.

The High Plains squad was able to trim the deficit even further in the third as right fielder Jude Perea tripled down the right field line which drove second baseman Trevor Moses home. The Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and plated four more in the fifth to push their lead to 11-4.

One of the biggest highlights in the game came with one out in the bottom of the sixth as short stop Daniel Hunt showcased his defensive talent. Hunt cleanly fielded a ball hit up the middle and even with his momentum turning him around was able to touch second base for the force out. He then spun and jumped over the Lions baserunner, sending a bullet to first base for the 6-3 inning ending double play.

Hunt's defense sparked some Greyhound offense in the top of the seventh as Eastern made things interesting with a three-run frame. Smith led things off with a single into the left center gap that was followed up with a double to right field from Hunt several pitches later. Moses recorded his lone RBI of the ball game with a ground out to the right side of the infield. Hunt scored following the Lions attempt to throw out catcher Ryan Anderson who stole second base before Bowden sent an RBI single to center.

The Hounds will look for different results tomorrow and will have a couple of opportunities to do so as they prepare for a double-header with first pitch of game one scheduled for noon.
