Women’s Basketball Caps Off Regular Season with Victory Over Midwestern State

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico women's basketball scored its first points just over a minute into the game and led for the remainder of the contest, defeating Midwestern State 77-60 Saturday afternoon.

The Hounds took and early 9-0 lead following the opening tip and never looked back as their suffocating defense harassed the Mustang offense all game long. The Green and Silver held MSU to a 26.4% field goal percentage as the Mustangs connected on 19 of their 72 attempts. Despite only shooting 65 shots from the field, the Hounds were much more efficient with their shot selection, connecting on 41.5% of their shots which included a 5-for-13 clip from beyond the arch.

Coming out of the half time break, the Greyhounds owned a 44-34 advantage and were able to up their defensive intensity even further as Midwestern was held to just seven made field goals in the final 20 minutes of play. The High Plains squad forced 18 turnovers and converted those opportunities into 20 points.

Leading the way offensively was sophomore point guard Zamorye Cox who tallied 16 points and also dished out a game-high five assists. Also helping facilitate the offense was senior wing Jasmine Williams who recorded a career-best four assists to go along with eight rebounds.

Eastern's offense is at its best when it is able to push the ball inside to its athletic forwards and that's exactly what the Hounds did, outscoring their opposition 38-14 in the paint. Senior Natalie DeLonge and junior Alivia Lewis form one of the most dominant front courts in the Lone Star Conference and the pair continued to impress through out the game. DeLonge finished with 15 points, five rebounds and a block while Lewis totaled nine points, two steals, a block and a game-high 12 boards.

Redshirt freshman Natalie Stice started the game with the hot hand and was a big contributor to ENMU's early lead. Stice scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half and went 4-for-6 from the field to start the game.

Seniors Natalie DeLonge, Jerraysha Smith and Jasmine Williams suited up for their last collegiate regular season game but with the victory the Hounds clinched a spot in the 2019-20 Lone Star Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed, finishing with a 20-8 record (14-8 LSC).  The Green and Silver will host Oklahoma Christian in the first round Tuesday, March 3 in Greyhound Arena at a time to be determined.
