Huge Ninth Inning Rally Carries Baseball to Victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith

FORT SMITH, Ark. – Eastern New Mexico baseball showed its heart and determination as it rallied to overcome a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, defeating Arkansas-Fort Smith 7-6 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

Designated hitter Rio Granger sparked the late rally with a leadoff triple and later came around to score the following at bat with right fielder Alex Kuhn grounding out to third. Center fielder Malcolm Smith drew a walk and moved himself into scoring position with his sixth stolen base of the season.

Short stop Daniel Hunt got in the action with an RBI single to left field before catcher Ryan Anderson worked himself on base with a walk. With two runners on and the Hounds down to their final out, left fielder Camden Matthews dug into the batter's box. Facing a full count, Matthews got a pitch right over the heart of the plate that he drove into the right center gap for a two-run double.

Utility player and right-handed pitcher Blake Frye earned the win, pitching very effectively in the final 4.2 innings of the game. Frye allowed five hits, two runs, one earned while issuing three walks and recording a career-high seven strikeouts in his third appearance on the mound. Fellow righty James Puga started the ball game on the hill for the Greyhounds and tossed 4.2 innings of four-hit, four-run ball withy four walks and a pair of strike outs.

The Green and Silver committed seven errors but were able to overcome their defensive miscues by tallying seven runs on 12 hits. Eastern was able to showcase its power at the plate with six of their 12 hits going for extra bases. The Lions totaled their six runs on nine hits with only one error.

It was the Hounds who broke up the scoreless ball game with an RBI double to right field in the first before UAFS was able to tie the game back up at 1-1 in their bottom half of the third. First baseman Tristan Bowden regained the lead for the High Plains squad as he took a fast ball at the knees and drove it over the wall in right field for his first homerun on the year.

The Lions were able to mount a four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth before pushing their lead to 6-3 as they plated another in the sixth frame. The Hounds eventually got the last say as the capped off their late four-run rally in the top half of the ninth to stun the home squad.

Granger went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and a triple and also scored a pair of runs and drew a walk. Matthews failed to reach base in his first four trips to the plate but erased all of that with his heroic game-winning, two-run double in the ninth.

Eastern will return home next weekend as it hosts UT Permian Basin in a four-game series set to begin Friday, March 6 at 6 p.m.
