PORTALES, NM – Eastern New Mexico softball took a double-header sweep against West Texas A&M breaking a 35 game losing streak this afternoon.
The Greyhounds played smart facing the rival Buffs in a defensive battle. Finding the sweet spot in the fifth inning, in both contests, the Hounds were able to come out on top with a 4-3 game one and a 5-4 game two win. The Hounds impressed from the circle with its roster of freshman pitchers.
Brook Leger pitched six innings in the first match recording eight hits, four runs and two strikeouts.
Jordan Bowman pitched all seven innings of game two matching Leger in runs allowed and strikeouts.
Jennifer McElroy hit her seventh home run of the season as the Hounds tied up the contest in game one heading into the fifth inning. Stepping in as a pinch runner,
Mikenzey Patterson stole second base the second she got the chance.
Iliana Mendoza moved Patterson to third off a sacrifice bunt as
Elysa Rodriguez stepped up to bat. Rodriguez hit straight down the right side taking second sending Patterson home as the Hounds went up 2-1. ENMU sent two more across home plate for a 4-1 lead over the Buffs.
After pitching the first six innings, only allowing four runs,
Brook Leger took a step out of the circle as
Tava Boone took over in the seventh. Boone secured the Hounds win allowing just one hit from the Buffs as the Hounds ended the game on a double play.
Back onto the field for game two of the series, ENMU moved around the bases swiftly in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Finding their footing in the fifth,
Samantha Brockman stepped up to bat with the bases loaded and sent
Jennifer McElroy home.

Azalea Martinez taking the Hounds to a three run lead.
In the circle for the Hounds, freshman
Jordan Bowman, control the Buffs for three straight innings before allowing one run in the sixth. As the teams headed into the seventh, the Hounds just needed three outs to secure the win. West Texas A&M were able to capture one run off the Hounds but after a quick call from
Adriana Carabajal recorded in the third out of the game the Greyhounds secured their second win over the Buffs.
Eastern New Mexico will take to the road for a three game series against UT Tyler starting Friday, March 13.
